Refusing to Quit

Gov. Cal RamptonPresident Lyndon B. Johnson (left) shakes hands with fellow Democrat, Utah Governor Cal Rampton (right). Rampton is the only governor to have served three terms in the state.

He went from being a rejected candidate to become one of the most beloved, and successful, political figures in Utah history.

For ten years attorney Calvin Rampton tried and failed in Utah politics. Unsuccessful in bids for state, federal and democratic party offices. . . Rampton never gave up.

In 1964 an indifferent Democratic party nominated Rampton to run for governor.

Riding the coat-tails of Lyndon Johnson in the last Democratic presidential victory in Utah of the twentieth century, Rampton was elected. It was the first of three terms for Rampton. . .the longest term of service for a Utahn in the office of governor.

But, beyond election victories, Rampton transformed Utah with an overhaul of state government, and substantial investments in public and higher education.

It was a record forged by one man refusing to quit in the face of defeat.

It's a page from Utah's political past. This year, your vote will help write the next chapter of history.
