Ken joined the staff of KUED in 1981 after service in newspaper, radio and television reporting positions in California, Utah and Colorado. A graduate of San Jose State University, he has also studied at the University of Utah, the University of North Carolina and Cambridge University in England. His graduate studies have emphasized American political history and government.
In 1983 Ken was selected as a Fellow of the American Political Science Association. He spent a fellowship year working as a legislative analyst in Congress, serving the Senate Appropriations and House Foreign Affairs Committees.
Through Ken's leadership, KUED has served as an innovator in public service broadcasting in support of the election process. His focus on citizen-driven debates and free broadcast opportunities for all ballot-qualified candidates was recognized in 1993 by the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences with the prestigious Governor's Award for excellence in public service.
In addition to his work during Utah's election cycles, Ken has produced more than twenty documentaries for public television exploring critical social issues and regional history. The recipient of more than ninety awards for journalistic and program excellence, Ken's documentaries have been broadcast nationally on PBS and have also aired internationally.
His most recent documentary
for KUED, Fire
in the Hole, explored the fierce mine labor conflicts
of the American west at the turn of the twentieth century
and debuted in May of 2000. His documentary Joe
Hill debuts nationally on PBS in September.
