Smith earned his bachelor's degree and J.D. from Weber State University the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, respectively. He began his legal career in 1998 with a job in the Weber County Attorney's Office. He remained there for four years, until the right opportunity arose for him to shift gears- into the private sector. He signed on as a partner in the firm of Allen, Richards, Pace & Smith, where he was practicing at the time of his appointment by the Weber County Commission to serve as the county's top prosecutor. He has been the Weber County Attorney since May 15, 2009.
